The one constant in life is change. Sometimes this change occurs subtly over time, and other times it is sudden and or even frightening. Whether these changes are positive or negative to your life, there are psychological adjustments to be made. A licensed counselor can help you navigate through these transitions when you are no longer coping well on your own. Whether you are feeling depressed, anxious, or just “stuck”, counseling can help. Different therapeutic methods include: relationship therapy, divorce therapy, and coping with grief.

Going through a life transition can cause distress, anxiety, and emotional disconnection from daily life and family, making things more difficult for you as well as for those closest to you, generating conflict and relationship problems. A symptom often associated with life transitions is difficulty concentrating, and obsessing on how to manages these changes. This can lead to neglecting other responsibilities, creating more anxiety. Soon, a ripple effect can occur where the event can cause problems in other areas of your life — for example, stress from a divorce creating problems at work or with children’s school performance.

Sometimes there are basic questions of identity and sense of self that can surface. If you have been married for decades, who you may start questioning who you are and how you identify with others once you are single again. Another example is when children move out of the parental home, parents’ concentration is often shifted to areas of their lives that they were previously too busy to focus on. This idle time can be difficult and can place a strain on the parents’ marriage.

Many times we adjust well to these changes, and they are even welcome. Other times we may become emotionally stuck and depressed. Instead of integrating the change into your existing life, you may need help recognizing it as a life transition and working on understanding this new life stage. Professional counseling can help you reach this turning point.
